This isn’t really a story. I just saw these cute photos of George Clooney in Hawaii, where he’s filming a movie, and I was struck by how much happier he looked since the last time we saw him. That’s right, his drunken, grumpy appearance at the Oscars, where he happened to be with his girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis. Now, why does George look so happy in Hawaii one week later? Is it just because he’s in Hawaii, that lucky bastard? Or is it because there’s no sign of Elisabetta? Because I’m starting to wonder she got pushed away just as soon as Clooney finished campaigning for his second Oscar. I’ve been thinking for a few months that Canalis was on her way out, and I seriously can’t find any news about whether Canalis is in Hawaii with him – methinks he already sent her packing back to Italy.
Anyway, George is in Hawaii filming The Descendents with director Alexander Payne. It also stars Matthew Lillard, who I love and I always wish he got hired for more projects. He’s a really underrated character actor, and maybe working with Clooney will give him a career boost. I had forgotten that Clooney signed on for this movie, but apparently it’s been on schedule since last November. Here’s a basic rundown of the plot:
“The Descendants” focuses on Matthew King, a wealthy landowner with Hawaiian royalty in his blood. Life is far from perfect for Matthew — he has two irascible daughters in the form of ten-year-old Scottie and seventeen-year-old Alex, not to mention the fact that his high maintenance wife has slipped into an irreversible coma.
Making the impending death of Matthew’s wife even worse is the fact that her secret lover hasn’t been informed of the situation. Acting upon a sense of obligation, Matthew and his two daughters hit the road in search of the mystery man, perhaps the only man Matthew’s wife ever truly loved.

I wonder if Lillard is the mystery lover? No, he can’t be, right? That would be such weird casting. But strange casting is kind of what Payne does so well, even though I don’t always care for his films. About Schmidt was probably one of the most overrated films of all time, in my opinion. Anyway, I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this project, especially if Canalis is really gone and Clooney is recruiting a new cocktail waitress/model-type who likes it kinky.
